Summary:

Louisa May Alcott Elementary is a 2008 National Blue Ribbon School located on the West Side of Cleveland. The original school was built in 1925, with a large addition added in 1970. Both facilities are sound, but in need of modernization. The uninsulated buildings are difficult to heat and have poor acoustics, and the spaces provided are inadequate in size and function. The school serves a large special needs population but has real accessibility issues. The remodel meets these needs by enclosing underutilized exterior space, adding wall insulation, new efficient windows and skylights, state-of-the-art HVAC systems, and a new classroom technology package. The interior reconfigurations allow for 3 additional classrooms, including dedicated Art and Music, and expanded storage and work areas for staff. Site renovations enhance security, provide outdoor learning and lunch areas, and a rain garden. The building will be renovated in phases with students able to remain on site, and will attempt LEED certification at the Silver level.
